Time .. Tick Tock
You can’t touch it, smell it, or see it… but you can feel it passing.
We hear the expression “time is ticking away.” Is that true? Where does it disappear to?
I ask many people—especially on Sunday as we gather for a cup of tea or coffee before the church service—“How was your week?” Usually the reply is, “It was so, so busy.”
I often wonder, because I hear it so much, what it means to each person. So I agree and answer in return, “Yes, our days are busy, but what made yours so busy?”
I’m not asking for a minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour, or day-by-day breakdown. I’m starting a conversation. Now one has to think: Is this just the answer on the tip of my tongue that I always say, or was my week really so, so busy?
I, for one, am attempting to change and no longer use those words in reply. Instead, I’m going to say, “For sure, Monday to Friday rolled into each other, but I managed to be productive in multiple ways, and here we are celebrating Sunday. For that, I’m eternally grateful. How about you?”
So next time you’re asked “How was your week?” be kind and thoughtful. Remember, someone may be trying to step out and have a conversation with you—so help them. You never know where that conversation may lead.
Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
