Responsibility - The Word we Love
No sooner had the 67 ‘Youth Adventures’ students left the dormitories than the YWAM base was filled with the chatter and laughter of the young men and women beginning the October Discipleship Training School (DTS).
Our job to begin with is not only to prepare for the intake but also to get to know each student — yes, by name — which certainly brings its challenges. However, we love to be challenged, and we love to overcome, don’t we?
I had a lovely young man sit with me during lunch, and as I asked the usual questions to start a conversation, within a short time he was firing questions left and right:
How do you hear God?
Does He speak to you?
Is it audible?
Did He tell you your husband was the one?
How does God direct you?
This was much more than a lunchtime chat, we actually sat for quite some time talking and discussing these questions. It also was a wake-up call for me to pause and reflect, to think more deeply and to write about my journey with the Lord: its ups and downs, its highs and lows. Journaling is cathartic.
There’s always so much to learn. Here’s a snippet of what the Lord spoke to me about this week regarding taking responsibility and stretching your capacity. To do that it takes strength — not only physical, but mental and spiritual.
Along with my other hats, I’m now also serving in the kitchen with a beautiful Papua New Guinean girl who runs rings around me when it comes to capacity and responsibility. To truly be of assistance there, I have to understand the inner workings so I can complete a task before it’s even asked of me. Then I’ll be helpful to her.
Similarly, I can ask the Lord for direction — and I do — but greater still is knowing His Word, seeing His footprints, and ensuring my steps align with His.
“Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105
