Living in unity
How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.
Psalm 133:1
Each week, we have scriptures to focus on and meditate upon, so we can see for ourselves whether the Bible’s teachings are at work in our own lives. Sandor and I are now in week three of our YWAM adventure, and we’re loving it. Where’s Sandor? Shhh… he’s writing — not to be disturbed.
I truly believe that when you’re where you’re meant to be, it brings such deep, lasting joy. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t face challenges. Sorry to say, but if there are no challenges in your life, you’ve probably passed on to a better place.
Today, before our community prayer time, we were invited to do some square dancing. I hear you — and yes, I asked myself the question: What does square dancing have to do with missions? For some, dancing can certainly be a challenge. It’s as if they were born with two left feet and no coordination.
After one round of bumbling about, forgetting which hand was which, and realising I was turning clockwise instead of anticlockwise, rather than being embarrassed, I just started laughing. That was me — and quite a few others — this morning.
After the dancing debacle, we were reminded again of the scripture regarding unity, and asked what it now meant to us. Here’s what I took away from this morning:
We are all different in the body of Christ — we can’t all be dancing feet.
There are always opportunities to help one another.
Your weaknesses are someone else’s strengths, and vice versa.
When you’re in unity, you move forward together.
Unity is found in a common goal. To have unity, we must love one another, care for one another, hold one another higher, and serve one another. That, in itself, is the ethos of the YWAM base.
Finally, all of you, be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers (and sisters), be tender-hearted, be courteous.
1 Peter 3:8
The Word makes it abundantly clear that unity is God’s desire for His people — to live in harmony and work together. Whether it’s at home, with family, or at work, ask yourself: Is this being accomplished in my life?
Let me leave you with this — where there is unity, God commands a blessing.
